As part of Lidl’s commitment to reduce food waste by 25% in each store by 2020, the discount supermarket announced the installation of Too Good to Waste fruit and vegetable boxes in its 760 stores in England, Scotland and Wales.
Boxes worth £ 1.50 include about 5 kg of fruits and vegetables directly from store shelves. Unlike the Wonky Veg boxes sold in other supermarkets, these boxes are collected daily by Lidl employees in the store, which contain slightly damaged, discolored or spoiled but still usable fruits and vegetables.
Boxes will be available from the moment the store opens until noon, after which any remaining food boxes will be donated to charity as part of the Lidl's Feed it Back program.Back in August last year, Lidl tested the circuit in several areas to find out if there is a demand for this product. The scheme was gradually expanded to 122 stores, as a result more than 50,000 boxes were sold and the elimination of 250 tons of food products was prevented.
“The positive feedback we received from the results of our experiment was incredible: from our colleagues who showed great interest to him, and ending with our customers who contacted us from the very beginning, asking where they could get these boxes,” Says Christian Hartnagel, CEO of Lidl GB.
