According to EastFruit project analysts, improved weather in the south of Ukraine triggered a rapid increase in onion supply in the markets. The increase in air temperature and the cessation of precipitation allowed farmers to continue harvesting onions.
Due to the increasing number of onion offers, wholesale prices for it again dipped. In the middle of last week, vegetables in the country's markets were sold at 10-12 UAH / kg (38-45 US cents per kg), and today, June 17, traders ask for it 5-8 UAH / kg, which is 20-30 US cents per kg
It is noteworthy that a little more than 1 month ago, the wholesale prices of onions in the country were above $ 1 per kg. At the moment, the cost of onions in Ukraine is the lowest in the region. So, in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan it is sold for at least 27-30 US cents per kg, while in Ukraine you can buy onions at a price of 20-22 cents.
Export of onions from Turkey now goes at a price of 350 US dollars per 1 ton and the country has no difficulties with the demand for goods. In order for the price “swing” to stop in Ukraine, vegetable growers should seriously think about the possibility of systemic export of onions.
According to traders, as a result of a large amount of rain, Ukrainian onions cannot be of high quality. For this reason, it cannot be sold to EU countries. But Ukraine has already begun to supply onions to Moldova, as well as Belarus.
