The initiative was met with restrained criticism. Bags of paper and biodegradable materials are much more expensive than plastic. The buyer will have to pay to maintain a clean environment out of pocket, said Galina Zakharchenko, director of the local Central Department Store.
Authorities have already managed to conclude memorandums with several supermarkets on the transition to environmentally friendly packaging, says Oleg Kozhemyakin, first deputy mayor of the city. Educational work is also carried out in educational institutions.
