The Ecodia Center for Environmental Initiatives has warned of a possible environmental disaster in Ukraine due to rising sea levels and climate change. Environmentalists presented their information in the form of a map showing areas that could be flooded by 2100.
Unique research “Water is Close” showed that 590 settlements, including 34 cities, are under the threat of full or partial flooding. 75 thousand people in this case will become climate migrants.
More than 200 thousand hectares of agricultural land, more than 50 thousand buildings, 626 objects hazardous to the environment, may be under water by 2100, experts say "Ecodia".The situation was modeled taking into account the maximum predictive indicators of science regarding sea level rise, as well as vertical movements of the Earth's crust and overtaking phenomena. 2 zones that could be flooded were discovered.
To prevent the worst possible predictions of climate change outcomes, Ukraine must work both at the national and local levels. The country's goal should be to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero already in the middle of the XXI century, explains expert Anna Akermann, who presented the research and passed the map to the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ostap Semerak. In turn, the minister thanked the scientists for the information provided and added that such a map would be useful not only for the Ministry of Ecology. In response to this, Ecodia planned to transfer the card to other relevant ministries of the country.
