The Indian state trading company MMTC for the fourth time has postponed the deadline for submitting bids in an international tender for the import of yellow corn, this time until June 12, European traders said on Tuesday, June 4.
The deadline for submission of proposals was initially set for May 8, then postponed to May 15, May 22, then to June 6, and now to June 12. The main condition of India is corn without GMOs.
The purchase volume will be determined by MMTC, depending on the level of prices declared. Traders are asked to submit proposals for a minimum volume of 20,000 tons. MMTC is currently requesting corn supply proposals from July 15 to August 15. The previous shipment period was July 1 and July 31.
One of the European traders explained the somewhat strange behavior of India regarding the postponement of the application: “I got the impression that the huge increase in world corn prices since the announcement of the tender has puzzled some importers such as India.
A sudden jump in corn futures significantly increases the cost of imports. ” Previously, India was the main exporter of corn to Southeast Asia.
But due to a drop in production and an increase in demand from producers of poultry and corn starch, it became an importer of these products. This has raised domestic prices.
India has recently reported import purchases of corn from Ukraine, which is said to be the first in three years.
