Easy-care plants are very popular among lovers of home flowers, Zamioculcas is rightfully considered one of them. This flower is absolutely unpretentious and not capricious, but it happens that it stops its growth and does not throw out new shoots. What may be associated with such phenomena - will be discussed later.
Why is it not growing or growing badly?
Zamioculcas, as a rule, does not bring trouble to its owners. However, it is worth knowing what reasons can provoke a deterioration in its growth and development.
Did you know? The outward resemblance to Crassula, which is popularly called the “money tree”, led to the appearance of a second name in Zamiokulkas - it was dubbed the “dollar tree”. Another version - this name is assigned to the flower because, according to the teachings of Feng Shui, this plant symbolizes financial well-being.
Inappropriate soil composition
Zamioculcas refers to succulents, so the composition of the soil must meet the requirements of this group. It should be borne in mind that too heavy soil with high acidity can disrupt the normal development of the plant until it stops growing.
You cannot use universal mixtures for all types of flowers for cultivating a crop or uncultivated land from a summer cottage.
Wrong landing
Very often Zamioculcas suffers due to violations of the rules of planting. The plant most successfully propagates through division of the tuber. If during the separation the roots were damaged by a knife or incorrectly divided, then an infection can get into them, which, in turn, leads to a complete halt to the growth and death of the plant.
Unsuitable tank for landing
This type of succulents rarely blooms and grows extremely slowly, so do not immediately plant it in a large pot. If the flower has too much space, all its forces will be directed to the development of the roots, which, of course, will entail a slowdown in the growth of stems.
Important! The first 2 years Zamioculcas produces only a few leaves per year, so intensive growth during this period should not be expected.
Lack of nutrients
Many flower growers believe that succulents have enough simple care without additional fertilizing, but this is not so. The poor soil composition and lack of minerals in it can affect the condition of the flower: new shoots develop very slowly, and the leaves become yellowish.Especially harmful for zamioculcas is a lack of nitrogen in the soil - it is this element that the plant needs for full growth.
Wrong watering mode
The most common mistake when growing a dollar tree is overflow. It is because of improper watering that the whole flower can die, and not just its individual stems.
Zamioculcas is very drought-resistant and is able, like cacti, to accumulate a supply of fluid in its root system and gradually spend it. Excessive watering provokes fluid stagnation in the soil and causes rotting of tubers.
Important! Sometimes, due to an excess of moisture, you can observe a kind of "cry" of the plant, or guttation. The flower activates the glands at the ends of the leaves, through which it removes excess water to the outside.
Pests or diseases
Despite adaptability and resistance to external conditions, zamioculcas can suffer from pests or diseases characteristic of this group. Most often, it affects aphids, scale insects and spider mites that fall from neighboring plants. Aphid is especially dangerous - it is able to completely destroy the foliage of the flower, if you do not get rid of these insects in time.
What to do and how to fix the problem?
The difficulties described above can be avoided if timely preventive measures are taken:
- To eliminate root decay, it is important to observe a moderate watering regime: Zamioculcas is watered only when the earthen coma in the pot is completely dry. In winter, the amount of watering is minimized - up to 1 time per month.
- Yellowing and dropping foliage usually provoked by a violation of the temperature regime. The flower perfectly tolerates heat and drought, but negatively reacts to cold air and drafts. You need to choose a protected warm place to place the plant.
- Transplanting or dividing plants should be done very carefully to prevent damage to the tubers of the root system.
- Regular transplant Zamioculcas 1 time per season should be carried out before the growing season (in March). It is important to select a container that will be 2–4 cm wider than the root tuber.
- Proper soil selection: Succulents grow better in light soil with low acidity. A mixture of peat, sand and perlite is ideal. You can use a ready-made soil mixture for cacti.
- Regular feeding flower during the growing season. From April to August, zamioculcas enters the phase of active growth, it is during this period that it is necessary to fertilize the soil (for example, Agricola fertilizer for cacti and succulents) once every 2 weeks, at a concentration recommended by the manufacturer.
- For successful pest control regularly inspect the foliage and stems of the plant for damage or insects. If a spider mite is found, the foliage is washed with a warm soapy solution. If this does not help, resort to the help of special tools (for example, "Anticlesch"). Scabies are usually well removed with a sponge dampened in soapy water, but for prevention, it is better to spray the flower with an insecticidal flower preparation (for example, Aktara). Aphids need to be destroyed as soon as possible, using means to control insects (for example, "Decis").
Useful care tips
The dollar tree is a very practical home plant, and it’s easy to take care of it.
It is enough to use the general tips of experienced gardeners:
- the flower feels good in hot conditions, but do not forget from time to time to spray the foliage with water and wipe with a damp sponge from dust;
- when propagated by dividing the bush it is necessary to dry the slice well before planting it in the soil;
- Zamioculcas feels best under the sun, therefore, for its placement it is recommended to choose the most lighted room;
- if the plant withers and looks sick, you can pull it out of the pot, wash the roots with a weak solution of potassium permanganate and transplant into a new soil.
Did you know? Zamioculcas became a home flower only in the 20th century. Prior to this, it was considered unsuitable for indoor maintenance, unlike most modern indoor plants, developed as early as the 18th century.
So, a close acquaintance with Zamioculcus, or the dollar tree, allows you to make sure that it is an almost perfect home flower, attractive, resistant, and also requiring minimal care. And the problems arising during its cultivation are solved by simple preventive measures, accessible even for a beginner grower.
