Record high prices for Ukrainian tomatoes at the end of July began to decline. This was reported with reference to the data of its own price monitoring in the Analytics department of the Shuvar ORSPP, the largest wholesale market in Western Ukraine.
As previously reported, in mid-July 2019, prices for greenhouse tomatoes in the wholesale markets of Ukraine soared to unprecedented rates of 25-35 UAH / kg. At the end of the month, market tension began to fall rapidly, and over the last three business days of July, prices for Ukrainian tomatoes fell by 25%.
The decrease in prices this week is due to the appearance on the market of the first large batches of tomatoes of open ground. The collection season of these products was delayed in 2019 by an average of 10 days, and the supply of greenhouse tomatoes was limited due to flooding of the greenhouses of Transcarpathia, Info-Shuvar reported.
Today, on the platform of the Shuvar market, ground tomatoes are offered at 9-12 UAH / kg. (0.32-0.42 euro / kg.), Greenhouse tomatoes at 17-20 UAH./kg. (0.60-0.71 euro / kg.). Even after a noticeable decrease in the price of tomatoes, they still remain record high: at the end of July 2018 and 2017, the cost of Ukrainian tomatoes was 2 times lower.
Despite the price increase and limited supply, compared with last year, the volume of sales of tomatoes through the wholesale market "Shuvar" in July increased by 15% to 4.3 thousand tons.
The Analytics department explains this fact as follows: wholesale markets are always a large concentration of volumes and assortment in conditions of scarcity, procurement at such sites allows traders to optimize costs and risks.
