While retailers around the world are trying to use less and less disposable plastics, Philippine Tawi-Tawi sellers have come up with more environmentally friendly alternatives. It has been observed that several fruit and vegetable sellers in Bong-ao carried their products in baskets completely woven from coconut leaves.
Of course, these Filipino sellers are not alone in their invention. After the government of India introduced a ban on disposable plastic packaging, banana leaf sellers in southern Bangalore are also hoping for a good business using banana leaf baskets.
“This means there will be less non-degradable waste. We expect some growth in our business after the ban on disposable plastic packaging, ”said Satish, a banana leaf seller at Chamrajpet.
Another seller also hopes that after the ban on plastic, their business will grow. “Farmers will also profit from the ban. Plastic does not decompose in the soil, but banana leaves are environmentally friendly, ”he concluded.
According to Jan Darren Guiwan, who shared the photos, Asian sellers did a great job by reducing the use of disposable plastic due to natural materials.
