At the end of April, 1 kg of millet in the Ukrainian markets cost 35 UAH, which is 1 UAH more than at the beginning of the month. Agrarian officials of Ukraine advise farmers to sow more millet.
Officials sent written appeals to the farmers of the Vinnitsa region with a proposal to expand the cultivated area under certain crops. Such letters came from the regional department of agricultural development, ecology and natural resources. For most farms, this crop did not arouse interest, but some farmers asked where millet seeds could be bought.
For information, in 2018 in the Vinnitsa region millet was grown on an area of 700 hectares. It was received 1.4 thousand tons of grain. At about the same level, it is planned to plant millet this spring. So far, more than 100 hectares have been sown with crops.Last year, none of the farms in the Chechelnitsky district of the Vinnitsa region raised millet. This year it is planned to sow culture on a small area in one of the farms. Five years ago, the millet harvest collected in the district's economy was never realized, and the grain deteriorates from long-term storage. Since then, farmers do not want to grow a culture, said Svetlana Demchenko, chief agronomist of the Chechelnitsky district department of agro-industrial development.
The situation with millet is similar in the Lipovetsky district, where farmers also refuse to grow it. This spring, none of the farms reported on the sowing of millet, said Natalia Buga, chief agronomist of the Lipovetsky district department of agro-industrial development.A small amount of millet and sorghum is grown in the experimental plots of the Golden Ear farm in the Mogilev-Podolsky district. But these are too small volumes to affect the Ukrainian market of cereals.
According to economist Leonid Kozodoy, millet will not be cheaper, due to the fact that farmers do not plan to increase the sown area of millet. Perhaps the price of cereals will increase slightly, especially in the market, as sellers will want to "pull" it to store prices.
